2007/08 Corporate Social Responsibility Report
Carbon management is one of the biggest challenges the world faces today. As Alliance Boots recognises how important this agenda is, and that is why we are committed to substantially reducing the carbon intensity of our Health & Beauty business expressed in the reduction of CO2 emission tonnes against the total carbon intensity.
Whilst all elements of our operations are being carefully scrutinised it is clear that energy use is by far the largest contributor to our carbon emissions. It is consequently this aspect of our carbon footprint that is the primary focus of our attention. All activities remain important but energy is the critical issue for Alliance Boots.
Our outlets are the main users of energy. This accounts for around 85% of their total carbon dioxide emissions. This is why in our Health & Beauty business in the UK, we are investing in technology such as a business energy management system that enables us to monitor the energy use by outlet every half an hour.
(Product delivery CO2 emissions are calculated by adding emissions from our owned fleet vehicles and those of third party contractors where they are acting solely on our behalf and using their transport just for our operations.)
(Energy data excludes Russia)
We are very pleased that, over the last year, we have continued to win recognition in the UK for our innovative and committed approach to improving carbon management. As well as being accredited by the “Carbon Trust” under its “Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme”, we have qualified for entry to the “European Business and Environment Awards”.
