The creation of Alliance Boots three years ago through the merger of Alliance UniChem and Boots Group gave us a unique opportunity to re-engineer our approach to corporate social responsibility, building on the best from all parts of our enlarged Group to create a new model. For us, local ownership of the corporate social responsibility agenda is the key to our success and we have taken the innovative approach of decentralising corporate social responsibility to enable local ‘champions’ to set local programmes in line with priorities set at Group level. We have established a Group-wide framework in which corporate social responsibility activities can thrive.
Businesses in our Health & Beauty Division have a long history of working closely with the community, delivering high quality customer care and engaging in charitable work. Boots is one of the most trusted retail brands in the UK and plays an important part in many people’s lives. Similarly, businesses in our Pharmaceutical Wholesale Division have worked for decades to bring healthcare closer to the community. Together, our business activities are focused on improving the health in the local communities we serve and helping our customers and patients to look and feel their best.
We have a shared sense of responsibility which is strongly in evidence as people throughout Alliance Boots continue to pursue, with dedication and enthusiasm, many corporate social responsibility activities. This reflects our commitment to doing business responsibly and building the internal and external trust upon which our success depends. Increasingly we are gaining recognition externally for our efforts across the Group and have received a number of corporate social responsibility awards in 2008/2009.
Corporate social responsibility is embedded in our culture. It forms a natural part of our day to day business, and we are committed to achieving our corporate social responsibility goals. I have every confidence that we are on track to build a world-leading sustainable group.
