At Alliance Boots, we are determined to be a leader and an example to others in addressing the threat of climate change. We pursue many practical activities which contribute to the overall reduction of our carbon footprint.

Commitment to improving carbon management

In line with national and international commitments on climate change, we aim continuously to reduce the carbon intensity of our Group and to implement initiatives to cut our carbon to improve the sustainability of our businesses.

Boots UK is a sponsor of the May Day Network, the UK’s largest group of businesses committed to taking action on climate change, through energy efficiency and by embracing the necessary move to a low carbon economy.

Our May Day champion

In May 2009 Nicola Green from BCM, our contract manufacturing business, was named a ‘May Day Hero’ by Business in the Community for her corporate social responsibility efforts during 2008/09. She was presented with her award by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at the Prince’s May Day Summit in London.

Nicola’s first achievement as the champion of corporate social responsibility at BCM was to set up the business’ Corporate Social Responsibility Action Group, which, in addition to herself, includes BCM’s Managing Director, Operations Director and Commercial Director. Monthly meetings with BCM’s executive team were then held to agree corporate social responsibility action plans across all three manufacturing facilities in the UK, France and Germany. At the same time, BCM developed a formal environmental policy with targets for reducing landfill, recycling and energy conservation. Activities over the last year have included waste disposal training for technical employees and an energy saving awareness event.
