During 2010/11, our community contributions totalled £5.1 million compared to £4.9 million in the previous year. These contributions are made up of cash donations (charitable and other donations) and non-cash donations, which include employee time, in kind donations and also management costs.
The balance of cash and non-cash contributions remains broadly in line with last year and reflects the significant amount of employee time and resource we encourage is given to charitable projects across the Group.
We endeavour to work in partnership with many different organisations and businesses; this cross-sector engagement ensures the effective utilisation of resources, reducing duplication of effort and sharing learning and knowledge.

Where we contribute for the year ended 31 March
Businesses within Alliance Boots provide funding to support small local projects through regional, national and international activities. We are very conscious of our responsibilities at both a local level to the communities immediately around us and at the national levels in which we operate.
The high proportion of community contributions at the national and local level reflects the Group’s continued commitment to directing community investment wherever possible to these areas of operation. By using our local and national resources, we are able to provide community contributions consistent with our growing geographic presence.
