Diversity

Alliance Boots is committed to equality of opportunity in all its employment practices, policies and procedures.  Within the framework of various laws we operate under, we are committed to achieving and maintaining a workforce which broadly reflects the local catchment area within which we operate.

No employee or potential employee therefore receives less favourable treatment due to their age, disability, marital status, religion, colour, ethnic origin, nationality, religious belief, creed, gender, race or sexual orientation.

Our approach to diversity aims to ensure that differences are recognised, understood and valued, to bring benefit for our individual employees, our businesses, our customers and the communities in which we work.

It is critical to the success of the Group that we continue to nurture the different and diverse talents in our business and corporate functions and we have designed our employment policies to achieve this.  We do all that is practicable to meet our responsibilities towards the employment and training of disabled people.  Where on of our people becomes disabled, every effort is made to provide continuity of employment in the same job or a suitable alternative.

We are committed to promoting and maintaining a culture of respect and equal opportunity in which all decisions about recruitment, hiring, compensation, development and promotion are made solely on the basis of a person’s ability, experience, behaviour, work performance and demonstrated potential.

Our continuing challenge is to ensure that diversity is appropriately supported in our workforce and reflected in our leadership.  In our businesses, understanding different cultures is a major advantage.  We view diversity as a key to our future.  To understand the needs of our customers and consumers, we must reflect this diversity in our employees, our suppliers and in everything we do.  Offering a workplace where diversity is valued helps us to build the top quality workforce that is crucial to our success, by enabling us to attract and retain great people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

We communicate with our people through a wide variety of channels, reflecting the diversity and geographical spread of our Group.

The Group’s diversity policy statement is published on the Company’s website in the corporate governance section under the social responsibilities committee.

Boots Ireland continues to take an active role in ensuring its diversity policies are adopted by all employees.  Boots Ireland provides training, including a specific e-learning module on diversity, and communications with staff to raise awareness and understanding of diversity.  It also gives full consideration to requests for flexible working to facilitate individual circumstances.

Managing Director of Boots Ireland said, “A diverse workforce better equips us to understand, anticipate and meet the needs of all our customers; recruit, retain and develop the best people; and act responsibly in the communities in which we are a part of.  We believe that the better our people become, the better our organisation will be.  Helping our people develop their talents not only enables them to fulfil their potential at work but it is also a vital component in our strategy”.

Boots Ireland reached 8th place in Ireland’s Best Workplaces 2011 in a special Great Places to Work survey supplement form the Irish Independent.
