Launching a new apprenticeship scheme

In April 2011, Boots Opticians launched a new apprenticeship programme for entry-level employees putting the customer experience at the heart of the programme. The programme recognises the differing needs of our optical consultants. Many of our consultants are employed on a part-time basis with family commitments making it difficult for our people to attend residential courses. With this in mind the content was designed for sessions to take place over a single day and five new regional training centres in Harrow, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol and Birmingham were created. In 2011/12 around
470 colleagues were trained at these centres.

The result is a more accessible apprenticeship scheme. This innovation was recognised by the Confederation of British Industry who asked Boots Opticians to present the scheme to their membership as an innovative way to increase access to similar apprenticeship schemes. Lucy Sarson went through the scheme and said, “Working on my NVQ was enjoyable and really helped me to understand my position as an Optical Consultant better, as I was able to gain practical experience and also have seven days of teaching at a dedicated training centre.”
