Dispensing & Related Income
Boots is the UK market leader in both retail dispensing and related pharmacy services.
In the year ended 31 March 2014, around 35% of Boots UK revenue was from Dispensing & Related Income, a total of 222 million items were dispensed from pharmacies across the UK by more than 6,500 pharmacists. This represents around one in five non-hospital prescriptions across the UK.
Boots offers a free repeat prescription service where it liaises with the patient’s doctor surgery to order and collect the patient’s repeat prescription which can then be collected from a local Boots pharmacy, avoiding the patient having to visit the surgery. In addition to dispensing standard prescriptions, Boots offers domiciliary dosage prescriptions made up in patient specific packs and a prescription service to care homes across the UK.
Related Income from pharmacy services comes primarily from Medicine Check-ups and the New Medicines Service and other locally commissioned pharmacy services. These include weight loss and smoking service programmes and increasingly medicine adherence programmes. Just under 95% of Boots pharmacies incorporate private consultation facilities which are used to deliver many of these services.
Boots also offers a range of consultation services focused on the most important health conditions impacting families in the UK, including diabetes, asthma and a new Boots 'Smoke Less Plan'.
Boots is the UK market leader in sales of retail health products. In the year ended 31 March 2014, Retail Heath accounted for around 15% of Boots UK revenue. This category comprises non-prescription medicines (available for self selection and from behind the pharmacy counter) and other health related products, such as vitamins.
Products sold include widely available consumer brands, together with attractively priced products exclusive to Boots such as the Boots Pharmaceuticals range. Boots Pharmaceuticals has the widest range of healthcare products of any brand in the UK, including therapeutically proven medicines, natural alternatives, vitamins and first aid products.
Beauty & Toiletries
Beauty & Toiletries, where we have leading market positions, accounted for around 35% of Boots UK’s revenue in the year ended 31 March 2014.
Nearly three quarters of sales in this category are beauty products, including premium and self selection cosmetics and related skincare, fragrances and beauty accessories. This includes No7, the UK’s leading skincare brand, with its award winning anti-ageing beauty serums developed by Boots scientists in Nottingham, and other Boots products such as the SEVENTEEN range of cosmetics.
Toiletries includes suncare, men’s, personal care, indulgent bathing and haircare products. In addition to widely available brands, Boots sells its own Boots Soltan suncare range, Botanics and other Boots products, plus ranges exclusive to Boots UK such as Soap & Glory and the Champney’s spa range.
Lifestyle accounted for around 15% of Boots UK revenue in the year ended 31 March 2014 and comprises the baby, nutrition, photography, electrical (beauty), seasonal and other lifestyle sub-categories, including miscellaneous sales. This category is a key driver of footfall in Boots stores, particularly nutrition, where Boots sells a wide range of ‘food to go’ including its Shapers and Delicious food ranges and popular lunchtime ‘meal deal’ offer. Seasonal includes the Boots range of Christmas gifts, including beauty and toiletries gift packs, many of which are sourced directly in Asia via the Alliance Boots buying office in Hong Kong.
